The rapper, who was born and lived nearby, was leaving the Riva Motorsports store when two armed suspects approached him, with at least one opening fire, the sheriff's department said.

The victim was identified as XXXTentacion, whose birth name is Jahseh Onfroy, according to a tweet from the Sheriff's Office.

XXXTentacion shot to fame with the song Look At Me, which has been streamed 81 million times on Spotify.

He was said to be working on a new album titled Skins before his shock death.

He was taken to Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, and the Broward County Sheriff confirmed he had died. He faced 15 counts of false imprisonment, aggravated battery of a pregnant woman and domestic battery by strangulation for an incident that occurred with his girlfriend in 2016.

Tributes have poured in for the controversial artist.

On Instagram, he told fans how he had invited XXXTentacion to travel to LA this week to work on music together.

MC VI Seconds added: 'Where there's life there's hope and XXXTENTACION was really bettering himself and his fans with his turn to positivity only to have it cut short. Rest In Peace young king'.

Stephanie Martinez, a 29-year-old mother who lives in the neighbourhood, was just coming back from the pool with her kids when she heard three shots. "I don't make hate music". Upon exiting the dealership, assailants gunned down the rapper, then quickly fled the scene.
