Ivan Rakitic’s penalty kick in shootouts sends Croatia past Denmark

First a Denmark long throw caused chaos in the Croatia box and Mathias Jørgensen tucked home after less than a minute!

The BBC reports that after making nine changes for their final group match Croatia will recall a host of players including Ivan Rakitic, Dejan Lovren and Mario Mandzukic.

The teams stayed even for the next 116 minutes, including the 30 minutes of extra time.

Danish star Christian Eriksen believes his team can defeat Croatia within the regulation 90 minutes.

Modric's spot kick was weak, though, and Schmeichel dived to his left to smother it for the first of his three penalty saves.

They have both only reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup once, with one guaranteed to make just their second appearance.

But Hareide insists today's encounter will not just be a case of Denmark's tight defence against Croatia's risky attack.

Andrej Kramaric (for Perisic 96) - 6 - Looked lively during his short spell on the pitch, and helped his side win a late penalty, though the subsequent spot-kick was saved.

Dejan Lovren nearly got the second goal for the Croats seven minutes before the break with a glancing header that sailed just wide of the upright. Ball takes the deflection and Croatia now win the corner.

Denmark, meanwhile, are happy to continue flying under the radar, buoyed by a 17-match unbeaten run. He has had 4 shots on target this World Cup and has 13 goals and 5 assists to his name in his last 16 appearances for Denmark. Coming to Russia, Croatia won one and lost one practice game before the main tournament got underway.

This side of the draw is now wide open that Spain are out, meaning that one of Russia, Denmark, Croatia, Sweden, Switzerland, England or Colombia will be in this year's World Cup final.

Fans will be waiting to see who comes out on top between Modric, and Christian Eriksen, Denmark's standout player.

Pione Sisto (for Braithwaite 105) - 6 - Injected pace and precision for the final 15 minutes, and immediately looked like Denmark's most unsafe player. But Jorgensen saved what would have surely been a goal, and then his goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel came to the rescue. It must be buzzing in Croatia at the moment because they have been excellent in this tournament so far.
