The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam intends to move the Madras High Court demanding a burial spot at Marina beach, alongside other former chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, following the death of its party chief and five-time chief minister M Karunanidhi on Tuesday.
In the health bulletin released last evening, the doctors have said maintaining the vital organs of the Veteran Politician has become a challenge considering his age-related ailments.
The 94-year-old was being treated for fever and urinary tract infection reported The Hindu.
#03:50 PM: Stalin requests CM Palaniswami for a place along Marina beach: DMK working president MK Stalin has reportedly requested Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami for a place along the Marina beach in Chennai, where they can build a memorial for the ailing DMK chief Karunanidhi. Since then, Murasoli played a significant role in advancing causes championed by Periyar E.V. Ramasamy's Dravidian movement and later in nurturing the DMK as a political party through the writings of C.N. Annadurai and Karunanidhi.
Karunanidhi was chief minister of Tamil Nadu five times and successfully contested 12 state elections, building legions of supporters on the way.
He was known for drawing foreign investors to India's second largest state economy, and oversaw the state becoming an industrial powerhouse, credited with opening many industrial and technology parks. "It is one of the reasons why DMK continues to survive as a cadre-based unit", said DMK spokesperson Manuraj Sundaram, reports DailyO. Both were bitter foes of Karunanidhi in politics.
When the DMK entered the electoral fray in 1957 with demands for Dravidanadu-secession from India-the party was still unrecognised, but 33-year-old Karunanidhi won from Kulithalai constituency. The TMC came to power in the state. While MGR proved to be his biggest rival, the movie star's successor, J. Jayalalithaa was also a formidable foe. The government has also declared a seven-day mourning in the state.
The DMK will now be led by M.K. Stalin, Karunanidhi's son and successor.
Like Jayalalitha ji, Kalaignar was an expression of the voice of the Tamil people. His unfortunate demise has shattered the heart of many celebs in Tamil Nadu.
