Trump Signs Bill Named After McCain, But Doesn't Mention Senator Once

In a ceremony at Fort Drum military base in New York, Trump expressed his pleasure for Congress' quick approval of National Defense Authorization Act.

Like President Donald Trump, McSally omitted mention of the elder McCain when she touted her support for the National Defense Authorization Act, named in John McCain's honor.

Trump said the bill "is the most significant investment in our military and our war-fighters in modern history". But none of the speakers at the bill signing - President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, or Rep. Stefanik - mentioned McCain at all.

He said there was "no better place than right here at Fort Drum" to celebrate passage of the bill, which will boost military pay by 2.6%, giving service members their largest increase in nine years.

President Donald Trump couldn't manage to say a single nice thing about Sen.

In May, a West Wing aide dismissed McCain's negative opinion on Trump's Central Intelligence Agency nominee during a closed-door meeting by saying of the senator that "he's dying anyway".

The bill authorizes billions of dollars for military construction, including family housing.

"I'm very proud that the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 has been signed into law", he said.

It reflects the determination of the United States to resist the expansion of Chinese military activity in cyberspace and around disputed islands in the South China Sea, where Beijing is believed to have deployed cruise missiles. Trump has had a long-running feud with the Arizona Republican, who is battling brain cancer. "We're going to strengthen our military like never, ever before, and that's what we did", he said.

The president said the defense policy measure signals that the U.S.is "on the move once again and we are not backing down". Under the new spending plan, the Pentagon is authorized to purchase 77 F-35 fighter jets at a cost of almost $7.6 billion, among other aircraft and equipment.

"It is not enough to merely have an American presence in space", Trump told troops at Fort Drum.

The White House opposed putting stronger measures against the companies in the bill, and the measures were softened before lawmakers held their final vote. McCain hours later in a speech at a NY fundraising event.
