Cardiff City vs. Newcastle United - Football Match Report

Cardiff City and Newcastle United could not be separated as they played to a goalless draw in the first fixture on the day.

Cardiff were on top when Newcastle substitute Isaac Hayden was shown a straight red card after 65 minutes.

On an overcast Saturday in south Wales, the grey clouds seemed to follow the Brazilian about as his passing, tackling and, crucially, finishing came under scrutiny for all the wrong reasons as the 10 men of Newcastle missed a golden chance to claim an unlikely three away points. The winger was sloppy on the ball the entire match and according to OptaJoe, he is the first player since 2010 to play the entire first half and complete zero passes.

Wolves defender Matt Doherty conceded an own goal in the 29th minute, while Maddison scored the second on the dot of half time.

Twelve minutes in, Kenedy lost possession for the Toon Army. Neil Etheridge was the hero, stopping Kenedy's poor spot-kick.

Benitez still plans to loan out 22-year-old right-back Jamie Sterry, who had a spell at Crewe Alexandra last season.

On a match which saw both sides collect their first points of the season, Benitez added: "It was a very unusual game".

An angled Ayoze Perez strike was stopped by Etheridge as the frantic pace continued, and Cardiff fashioned another chance when Harry Arter and Josh Murphy were involved in a build-up that ended when Zohore failed to find Junior Hoilett in the area.

Cardiff created little in open play until the 38th minute when Ralls spied Joe Bennett making ground down the left.

Kenedy had an effort saved by Etheridge but Cardiff soon threatened again when Sol Bamba's header from a corner was scrambled clear. Newcastle's Kenedy experienced one at Cardiff and is no doubt back under his duvet.
