US Senator John McCain dies after brain tumour battle

Ohio's Republican Gov. John Kasich, a primary opponent of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election, tweeted Monday on the decision to raise the flags at the White House to full staff, calling it "Shameful". Her statement was a bit longer, as it included some extra admiration towards McCain's patriotism.

Former presidents and his colleagues who served with McCain in the House and the Senate posted tributes on social media Saturday.

In July 2017, McCain was diagnosed with a tumour called a glioblastoma, which is an aggressive type of brain cancer but returned to the Senate after his diagnosis and cast a pivotal vote against a Republican bill to undo the Affordable Care Act - Obamacare.

The maverick politician, who was a proponent of USA power, was taken prisoner of war in Vietnam but after his release helped secure the repatriation of the remains of missing-in-action soldiers.

John Weaver, a longtime friend and advisor to McCain, said, "It certainly doesn't bother me or the people I know close to John".

Funeral arrangements are being finalized for Senator John McCain who died Saturday at the age of 81.

"Condolences to senator and war veteran John McCain, who greatly contributed to the normalization of Vietnam-U.S. relations", said one message in Vietnamese that was left at the sculpture and attached to a bouquet of flowers on Monday.

Obama and George W. Bush will be giving eulogies at McCain's funeral.

McCain, even as he neared death, disparaged Trump's presidency, rebuking the US leader for his seeming embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin's position at last month's Helsinki summit that Russia had not meddled in the 2016 USA presidential election. Following the memorial service in Phoenix, McCain will be flown to Maryland's Joint Base Andrews, where he will be met by armed forces body bearers. Trump is not expected to attend.
