Man arrested after extraordinary airport car chase

A driver crashed through glass doors at Lyon global airport and sped on to the runway before being chased down by police.

The dramatic runway chase, witnessed by an AFP journalist waiting on a plane at the airport, was captured in another amateur video shared thousands of times on social media.

The auto hurtled across the restricted runway area with police cars and a helicopter in pursuit following a chase along a nearby motorway, a police source said.

A source close to the case said the man suffered from psychiatric problems but did not have a police record.

He then fled the vehicle and ran along the runway as multiple police cars chased him, as caught on video.

The Lyon prosecutors' office is investigating possible charges of attempted murder against the suspect.

Within seconds, he is surrounded by at least a dozen police officers and several police cars and is arrested.

The driver, dressed in dark clothing, then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

"Arriving at the Lyon-Bron airport, he forced his way through the security barriers before heading towards the airport of Lyon Saint-Exupéry where again, he forced the security barriers with his vehicle".

The airport's operator suspended all flights after what it termed an "incident", before announcing on Monday afternoon that flights were "gradually resuming" and expected to be back to normal around 6:00 pm (1600 GMT).

Followed by the forces of law and order, he drove into Terminal 1 with his auto before getting to the runway, where he was overpowered by those forces and arrested.
