Delhi court extends custody of middleman in bribery case against Rakesh Asthana

All these officers were probing charges against Asthana, who is embroiled in six cases of corruption.
Verma then went on to move the Supreme Court today, challenging the government's decision.

According to a report on the legal news portal Live Law, CJI Gogoi asked Bhushan to submit the details of the case, saying the court would look into it. "Credibility shouldn't suffer", the spokesperson said.
The PIL filed through Advocate Prashant Bhushan alleges that "the chain of events shows that Mr. Alok Verma is being victimised for taking action against Mr. Rakesh Asthana, a Gujarat cadre officer and also for entertaining complaint against the top functionaries of the present government".
The CVC said the Director had created "wilful obstructions" in the functioning of the commission, which is a constitutional body and was "non-cooperative and non-compliant". The offices of both directors Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana have been sealed and all officers working with the CBI director have been sent on leave.
The government's actions "give serious credence to the requirement" that the CBI be given independence from the DoPT which "seriously hinders" the former's "independent functioning".
Now, according to the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, the CBI director can be appointed or suspended exclusively by a panel consisting of the prime minister, the CJI and the leader of Opposition.
But Jaitley dismissed as "rubbish" the allegation of a Rafale link.
A CBI spokesman later said that the SIT will carry out an impartial and fair inquiry expeditiously.
The prime minister-led appointments committee in an order Tuesday night had given charge of director to Rao with immediate effect, a government order said. Kumar has been accused of fabricating the statements given by Sathish Babu Sana, a witness in the Qureshi case, showing that he had recorded a statement on September 26, 2016, in New Delhi.
