Royal watchers slam Duchess of Cambridge over Alexander McQueen 'prom dress'

"It's shocking, actually, she really needs a fashion makeover", one user wrote.

The Duchess of Cambridge may not be Queen Kate just yet, but her formal Alexander McQueen outfit (plus, that tiara) last night could've fooled us.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge walks with Rear Admiral Ludger Brummelaar during a State Banquet at Buckingham Palace on October 23, 2018 in London, United Kingdom.

According to Majesty magazine, Kate's family order is different to previous examples, because it is not made of ivory.

"When I was born, there were one million elephants roaming Africa".

'And at the current pace of illegal poaching, when Charlotte turns 25, the African elephant will be gone from the wild'.

The tiara was made by Royal jewellers Garrard in 1914 to Queen Mary's personal design, from pearls and diamonds already in her family's possession.

The jewellery was so stunning it nearly outshone her Alexander McQueen dress, an icy blue-grey taffeta ball gown with a dropped waist falling to a full skirt with a slight train swirling around her feet.

Visiting for the event were King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands accompanied by Queen Maxima, who are now staying at the Palace.

The queen stunned in a white gown, the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara and the Cullinan III and IV Brooch while The Duchess of Cornwall wore her favorite Greville Tiara and a silver gown.

British Prime Minister Theresa May was also on hand.

The Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara was famously worn by Middleton's late mother-in-law.

It was a favourite piece of the Queen Mother's but hasn't been seen publicly since the monarch inherited it.

For the elegant occasion, Prince William donned a tux, while the former Kate Middleton wore a stunning Alexander McQueen gown with the Lover's Knot tiara.

It's thought that the queen bestowed the order on Kate in December a year ago.
