The gunfire erupted just after 9:50 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at Riverchase Galleria in the town of Hoover, about 10 miles from Birmingham, local reports said.

Al.com reports that Hoover police say the suspect is dead in an officer-involved shooting.

A 12-year-old girl was struck by gunfire and was taken to Children's Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham.

There was an argument between a 21-year-old man and an 18-year-old male.

Police said the fight occurred on the mall's second floor concourse area, near the entrance to the Footaction shoe store. Joiner said she heard six or seven shots and was ordered, along with some other shoppers, into a supply closet for cover.

Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato said he was grateful for the professional response of the police officers and firefighters on the scene tonight. Hoover, Alabama police say an officer shot and killed one teen, who had shot and injured another teen.

Other shoppers in the centre were then seen with their guns drawn, the publication reported.

"We were fortunate that that officer was there, where he needed to be", said Captain Rector. I'm so shaky right now I'm sorry if I don't make any sense.

The mall was cleared out by police following the shooting.

Officials said there had been extra officers at the mall Thursday night as a precaution.

"Oh, they shooting in this house", a woman screams as the shots ring out.
