"Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it anyway you want, but they are NOT coming into the U.S.A.", Trump wrote.
PAUL RATJE via Getty Images Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas) criticized tear-gassing migrants at the U.S. -Mexico border on November 25 and urged more timely processing of asylum seekers' applications.
San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer posted a tweet Sunday night urging US and Mexican officials to resolve the situation without closing the border.
McAleenan says the Border Patrol's use of force policy allows agents to use tear gas, but the incident would be reviewed.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said that 42 migrants who illegally crossed the U.S. -Mexico border over the weekend are now in custody. The Central American migrants involved in the illegal activity will be deported by Mexico, according to its interior ministry, the BBC reported on Monday. Mexico's Milenio TV showed images of migrants climbing over fences and peeling back metal sheeting to enter.
Mexican authorities have also announced that some 500 migrants will be deported for allegedly trying to "violently" and "illegally" cross the USA border on Sunday.
Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum said the throngs of migrants who have descended on his city is tantamount to a humanitarian crisis, and he declared an emergency.
Most of the migrants stumbled back into camp in the northwestern Mexican city of Tijuana, dirty, scared and with ripped clothes. The Border Patrol office in San Diego said via Twitter that pedestrian crossings have been suspended at the San Ysidro port of entry at both the East and West facilities.

Most recently, Trump reiterated his threat to close the entire southern border "if need be" - while telling Congress once again to "fund the WALL!". Border Patrol agents deployed tear gas to dispel the group because of the risk to agents' safety.

The group, part of a migrant caravan, were soon stopped near the United States border by Mexican authorities, who told them to wait for permission before the stand-off took place.
"We ran, but the smoke always reached us and my daughter was choking", Sarmiento said, visibly shaken.
To enter the USA legally, migrants must apply for asylum, but the wait for those requests to be processed can last up to a year. Arriving at the border, some chanted, "We are not criminals!"
With the approaching migrant caravan, Mexico's incoming government has denied reaching a deal with Trump administration on asylum overhaul; Bryan Llenas has more details.
The Trump administration has said asylum claims from members of a series of caravans originating in Central America must be processed outside the US, and that all those entering illegally will be denied.
