Former Major Leaguers Dead in Car Crash

Former Cubs infielder Luis Valbuena and former major leaguer Jose Castillo were killed in a auto accident Friday morning in Venezuela. Their vehicle had hit a rock in the road, according to the Houston Chronicle.

They had played in a winter league game in Venezuela Thursday night along with winter league teammate Carlos Rivero, according to reports.

Castillo last played in the big leagues in 2008, appearing in 15 games for the Houston Astros. Valbuena suited up for Los Angeles as recently as the 2018 season, but the Angels released him in August.

Venezuelan police said the players' vehicle overturned after hitting a rock while they were traveling to Barquisimeto following a game in Caracas. His best year came in 2016 when he batted.260 and slugged.459 while hitting 13 home runs and collecting 40 RBI for the Houston Astros.
