Four more National Football League coaches are out, including Adam Gase and Marvin Lewis

New England's Bill Belichick is wrapping up his 19th season with another postseason berth.

However, the Bengals never won a playoff game even during their peak under Lewis, sliding into the purgatory of mediocrity in the seasons following that career-high 12-win season.

The Bengals coach was sacked after 16 seasons with the organization, ending his stint as the second-longest tenured head coach in the league.

"I want to thank the Bengals' organisation, the fans and the city of Cincinnati for their support", Lewis said on bengals.com.

Marvin Lewis was once at the helm of a consistent victor, guiding the Cincinnati Bengals to four straight seasons with at least 10 wins, including a 12-win campaign in 2015.

Denver fired Vance Joseph after a 6-10 season.

The writing seemed to be on the wall for Lewis during the regular season, as the Bengals defense imploded, leading the team to part ways with defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, who was once touted as a future head coaching candidate while running the Detroit Lions previously stout defense. "I regret I haven't been able to provide them with the No. 1 goal of being world champions".

Browns coach Hue Jackson was sacked in October, and longtime Packers coach Mike McCarthy was let go earlier this month. Despite being given a vote of confidence during last year's offseason by the team's owner, Lewis led the Bengals to a 6-10 record making them the worst team in the AFC North. Although he leaves with the most wins in franchise history, his 0-7 record in the playoffs and 8-26 record against the Pittsburgh Steelers looms large over his tenure.

Miami didn't see enough progress, so it made a decision to dump Gase after his three seasons at the helm. We didn't win enough games.

Rumors of Lewis being fired by the team have been looming for years.
