Al-Shabab is an armed group based in Somalia, fighting to topple the Western-backed Somali government.

In a statement, the charity said Mr Potter had devoted the last 10 years of his career to "helping some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world" and had worked for the charity for three-and-a-half years in east Africa.

"We will seek out every person that was involved in the funding, planning and execution of this heinous act", he vowed.

- A huge blast followed by a gun battle rocked an upmarket hotel and office complex in Nairobi on January 15, 2018, causing casualties, in an attack claimed by the Al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab Islamist group.

The bloody bodies of five attackers were broadcast across social media as Kenyatta announced the end of the siege, which echoed a 2013 al Shabaab assault that killed 67 people in the Westgate shopping center in the same district. The group is believed to be responsible for the El-Adde attack, the December 2014 Mandera quarry workers attack and the 2010 Kampala attacks.

Al-Shabaab has repeatedly targeted Kenya over the presence of its troops in Somalia.

The bloodshed in Kenya's capital appeared created to inflict maximum damage to the country's image of stability and its tourism industry, an important source of revenue.

It was a tormented night for families of those trapped as they waited outside the hotel, with sporadic gunfire ringing out, and the rescue of dozens of people at about 3:30am (0030GMT).

The American killed in the attack was identified as Jason Spindler, co-founder and managing director of San Francisco-based I-DEV International.

The president said he did not know how many attackers were involved.

The Red Cross said that 19 people reported missing to it, have since been traced.

Police warned the public there may be loud controlled explosions as they continued their sweep of the hotel. He was deeply committed to his work, to his teams, to Gatsby and to development in Africa.

The Kenyan government said its quick reaction to Tuesday's assault on the DusitD2 complex reflected improvements in its ability to respond to such brazen assaults on civilian targets.

Mr Spindler, who worked to grow businesses in emerging markets with his firm I-DEV International, joined the Peace Corps in Peru after the USA attacks.

The Houston-raised Spindler had a brush with tragedy on 9/11: He was employed by a financial firm at the World Trade Centre at the time of the 2001 terrorist attack but was running late that morning and was emerging from the subway when the first tower fell, according to his father.
