South Korea Stops Calling North Korea `Enemy' in Defense Report

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo escorts Vice Chairman of the North Korean Workers' Party Committee Kim Yong Chol, North Korea's lead negotiator in nuclear diplomacy with the United States, into talks aimed at clearing the way for a second U.S.
A diplomatic source in Washington said the objective of Suh's visit "was to hold discussions with US intelligence officials".
Kim was supposed to visit in November to meet with Mike Pompeo in NY.
Trump said on January 2 that he had received a "great" letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and would probably meet him again in the not-too-distant future, but there was no rush.
Trump told reporters in Washington on January 6 that the United States and North Korea were "negotiating a location" for a second summit and that "it will be announced probably in the not too distant future".
The North Korean visit could yield an announcement of plans for another summit between Mr Trump and Kim Jong-Un, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
"Kim wouldn't come and meet with Pompeo - and possibly Trump - if he thought he was coming to get the short end of the stick", said Mintaro Oba, a former U.S. State Department official who worked on North Korean issues.
However, some argue that Thursday's Pentagon assessment indicates the USA will need to do more than shore up its missile defense in addressing the threat posed by North Korea.
The Korea Customs Service said it has nine North Korean paintings that an unidentified number of businessmen tried to bring into the country after a trip to Pyongyang, North Korea's capital, last November.
And on Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence said the USA still awaits "concrete steps by North Korea to dismantle the nuclear weapons that threaten our people and allies in the region".
It wasn't immediately known whether he was carrying a message from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
On Tuesday, ministry spokeswoman Choi Hyun-soo told a news conference that Japanese participants in the working-level talks indicated some understanding when the South Korean side said crew members of the warship felt danger about the MSDF plane flight.
Experts said that any visit by Kim Yong Chol was nearly certainly a signal that the two sides were nearing agreement on terms for a second U.S.
Victor Cha, a former White House adviser on Asia under President George W. Bush, suggested that Trump may be so desperate for a policy "win" that he could be vulnerable to a bad deal with North Korea.
