Nominations for the 91st annual Academy Awards were announced this Tuesday morning and while the list includes most of the expected contenders, there are some big names who won't be reporting to the Dolby Theatre next month. That has now been cemented pretty clearly by the Oscar nominations, with Cuaron's movie picking up 10 nods - tied for the most with The Favourite.
A Star Is Born is also nominated for Best Picture, with Bradley Cooper up for Best Actor. There were rumblings that Christopher Nolan's dark and gritty bat-flick would make history, break the mold, and become the first comic book property nominated for Best Picture.
Let's take a look at all of the artists and films that made history with their 2019 Oscar nods!
Then actor-comedian Kevin Hart had perhaps the briefest tenure ever as Oscars host - a few days. Cuaron was nominated for direction, cinematography, original screenplay and best picture. The film had also been nominated for Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Drama at the Golden Globes. The "BlacKkKlansman" filmmaker, an outspoken critic of the film academy, was first nominated in 1990 for the screenplay of "Do the Right Thing".
Here are the 9 theatrical superhero films of 2018, ranked from worst to best. While Cooper received nominations in the best actor and best picture categories, it would've been nice to see him recognized for impressively directing his first feature film. And they left two open spots on the Best Picture possible-field-of-ten which DEFINITELY should have been filled this year. Peele, McKittrick and Blum were nominated in the same category for "Get Out" a year ago, and Peele went on to win in the original screenplay category.
"We are honored to receive our first Best Picture nomination and so many other firsts this morning", said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.
A happy surprise was a best actress nomination for breakout "Roma" star Yalitza Aparicio in her debut performance. Both Cuarón and Aparicio's co-star Marina De Tavira received nods for Best Director and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. She's also Marvel's first-ever female production designer.
A movie star has been born!
The singer also picked up another nod for best original song for Shallow, along with co-writers Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt.
The nominations offered something old and something new - breakthroughs for superheroes and streaming services, while still favoring old-fashioned issue-oriented dramas, costume fare and the latest version of the oft-remade "A Star is Born".
Kidman, an early Oscar favourite, was passed over for her lead turn in Destroyer as well as her supporting role in Boy Erased. Its recognition in various technical areas helped it to nab seven nominations today but the Academy decided that eight would have been more than enough.
