Trudeau government in crisis after Canada minister's resignation

Trudeau's office released a statement following the resignation saying Minister Sajjan would be assuming Wilson-Raybould's responsibilities as acting Minister of Veterans Affairs.

Nevertheless, her departure added fuel to opposition accusations of political interference in the justice system.

She also says that she has retained former Supreme Court justice Thomas Cromwell to advise her on this front.

Moving still further westward to British Columbia, Infrastructure Minister François-Philippe Champagne hosts a roundtable chat with the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce before heading out to tour various community projects across southwestern BC, while Transport Minister Marc Garneau is in Richmond to reveal the "most recent recipients of abandoned boats funding" during a stop at Steveston Harbour.

"If Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government shut the justice committee's work down, it would send a risky signal to Canadians about the state of our democracy", Singh said in a statement.

"What happened to me was a real tell-tale sign of how Trudeau's government is operating".

While the controversy snowballed, Ms Wilson-Raybould declined to speak, citing solicitor-client privilege and cabinet confidentiality.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh called on the Liberals to support a push at the House of Commons justice committee to look into the allegations that appear to have led to Wilson-Raybould's resignation.

Former attorney general of Canada Jody Wilson-Raybould is pictured during question period in the House of Commons on February 12, 2018.

But it's a pretty fair guess that her decision not to offer a plea bargain to Quebec construction giant SNC-Lavalin had something to do with it.

"The motion simply was you'll go to veterans affairs, It's lower on the totem pole so to speak, but the other thing was that you know there was a struggle to over where he would put the new rights portfolio and Jody rightfully wanted it in the Attorney General's office, Trudeau chose to give it to Carolyn Bennett, and it's died now, nothing's happened since that took place", said Wilson-Raybould's father.

Wilson-Raybould shepherded legislation to allow medical assistance in dying, prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression, and to legalize cannabis.

Former Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould has quit Justin Trudeau's front bench, and the ethics commissioner has launched an investigation.

Then he said she had reconfirmed a conversation the pair had last fall in which he told her that the final decision in any federal prosecution was hers alone.

"First Nations people appreciate what Jody Wilson-Raybould has done, taking a stand on principle", she said.

Her resignation provides stark contrast to Trudeau's characterization of the situation just a day earlier.

The very charges that SNC-Lavalin face make it impossible for the director of the Public Prosecution Service to consider the too big to fail argument.

Housefather said that there has been no pressure from above to the Liberals on the committee.

"It was a really positive step when Jody was appointed attorney general", said Terry Teegee, regional chief of the B.C. Assembly of First Nations. She goes on to thank Canadians who have supported her during her time in the federal cabinet and states she will remain as MP for Vancouver-Granville.
