Huawei bills the Mate X as "the world's fastest foldable 5G phone". When folded, the screen gets two separate areas, including a 6.6-inch main display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 2480 x 1148 resolution, and a secondary 6.38-inch screen with a 25:9 aspect ratio and 2480 x 892 resolution.
Huawei Technologies unveiled a $2,600 folding smartphone on Sunday which it said was primed for next generation 5G mobile connections, even as the United States campaigns to bar the Chinese company from such networks over security concerns.
While many believe the camera cutout itself is a different type of notch, Samsung wanted the Galaxy S10 to meet the expectations of all its customers, so the device comes with software tweaks to allow it to do that.
Huawei says Mate X pricing will be at €2,299 for a configuration with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, with a release timeframe for the middle of 2019.
And whereas Samsung's not telling anyone how thick its Galaxy Fold is when folded up, Huawei's proudly showing off the Mate X's 5.4mm thickness when unfolded and 11mm thickness when folded in half.
The first is that Huawei didn't need to equip with Mate X with a third screen as we saw on the Galaxy Fold, because when closed, the Mate X's 8-inch 2480 x 2200 bendy screen simply transforms into two displays in front and back measuring 6.6-inch and 6.38-inch, respectively.
Handset makers are looking to folding screens to reverse falling smartphone sales as consumers hold on to their devices longer due to a lack of innovations, but analysts predict the market for the feature will be limited, at least in the early days. It's calling it the 'World's Fastest Foldable 5G Phone'.
Before we delve into the internal specifications, you should know that Huawei has done everything in its power to prevent the Mate X from getting bulky.
Huawei just announced its first foldable phone Mate X at MWC 2019. Huawei reckons a 1GB movie will take around three seconds to download on this device over 5G. It uses a Quad 5G antenna to connect to the 5G networks coming online this year.
For example, whereas the Fold's screens are compromised - the exterior features a skinny and small 4.6-inch screen with huge bezels all around it and the unfolded larger interior screen has a cutout for the selfie cameras in the upper right - the Mate X's screens are larger and stretch closer towards the edges in all modes. It's here that Huawei has managed to squeeze in the Kirin processor, the 5G modem and all those Leica lenses.
Numerous other specs of this device remain a mystery.
The Mate X's insides are equally as impressive. We watched as the Mate X changed from a phone into a tablet while browsing YouTube.
