Fresh from a bruising fight over comments by her criticized as anti-Semitic, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar jumped back into the frying pan over the weekend, appearing to level harsh criticism at former United States president Barack Obama, then claiming she had been misquoted before seemingly backtracking.
Democrats wrestled for days about whether or how to punish Omar, a freshman from Minnesota who's one of two Muslim women in Congress.
"The Democrats have become an anti-Israel party and anti-Jewish party".
The comments came on the heels of an earlier controversy in which Omar was roundly condemned for suggesting that money is the reason U.S. lawmakers support the Jewish State.
Gold cautioned that some of the political figures who came out in support of Omar, such as Democratic Senator and presidential candidate Kamala Harris, weren't exactly fellow travelers of Omar's anti-Zionist sentiments. It condemns anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim discrimination and bigotry against minorities "as hateful expressions of intolerance". Democrats are trying to push past a dispute that has overwhelmed their agenda and exposed fault lines that could shadow them through next year's elections.
The resolution passed 407-23 in the US House of Representatives, with Omar's support.
Pocan joined Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib on February 27 during the Washington, D.C., confab that triggered the congressional resolution reviling all kinds of prejudice big and small.
In an interview on NBC News' "Meet the Press", Cheney described the House resolution as "clearly an effort to actually protect Ilhan Omar, to cover up her bigotry and anti-Semitism by refusing to name her".
"I probably don't agree with her a lot about what she feels about Israel and Palestine, but I don't know why this has to be seen as anti-Semitic", Maher said at the time.
Trump proclaims himself as Israel's closest ally, having moved the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and forged a close alliance with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"If [Omar] was a Republican, that member's name would be in this resolution and this resolution would be all about condemning antisemitism and it would be done so forcefully", Zeldin said in a fiery House floor speech. "I was saying how Trump is different from Obama, and why we should focus on policy not politics", she said in the tweet.
Pelosi said the broadening of the resolution didn't weaken it in her appearance with The Economic Club.
"She in 2017 went on a trip to Israel, and we have a picture of her smiling with [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu that he tweeted out", she said, "a war criminal who has just built an alliance with the Jewish KKK, which Kamala has not condemned".
