Police say DeCicco "took the brunt of the blast" when he opened the passenger side door of a 1985 Buick Electra. According to a report published by CNN, Francesco "Frank" Cali was scooped up by investigators on the front steps of his Staten Island residence with fatal gunshot wounds across his torso.
According to NBC New York, federal prosecutors in Brooklyn had described him as the underboss of the Gambino crime syndicate and was related through marriage to the Inzerillo family in Sicily. But he apparently ascended to the top spot in 2015, although he never faced any criminal charges that said so.
This is a breaking story.
The body of former mob boss John Gotti is carried from Papavero Funeral Home in the Queens borough of NY 15 June 2002.
"There were like six shots, and then there were three more", one witness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the Daily News.
The U.S. Probation Department referenced some of those ties to "high-ranking" Gambino crime family members when it petitioned the court in 2009 to modify the conditions of Cali's supervised release.
Pandrella, 59, is accusing of shooting Zito in his own home and stealing money from him - before returning to the scene of the crime hours later to grieve with the older man's family.
In 1985, Gambino "capo" John Gotti orchestrated the murder of Castellano to become the most publicized boss of the family.
The Gambino family is one of the New York´s five historic Italian mafia families - along with the Genovese, Lucchese, Colombo and Bonanno families.
Cali's demeanor, while he was alive, was completely unlike the manner John Gotti conducted himself, the latter an extravagant and ostentatious mobster the Mob hadn't seen since the days of Al Capone.
Cali's killing comes less than a week after the death of longtime Columbo crime boss Carmine Persico, 85, who'd been serving a 100-year prison sentence for racketeering and murder.
Last October, 71-year-old Sylvester Zottola of the Bonanno family was shot dead while waiting in his auto for an order from a Bronx McDonald's.
In addition, Probation requested that Cali be forbidden from contacting or associating with those affiliated with any organized crime groups, including the Camorra, 'Ndrangheta, and Sacra Corona Unita factions of the Sicilian Mafia.
