While investigations were ongoing multiple news outlets published information about the case that were unconfirmed by police.
But after police arrested two men who were "persons of interest", police sources revealed that police suspected Smollett knew the men and had paid them $3,500 to stage the attack.
Smollett is accused of orchestrating a fake hate crime by paying Ola and Abel Osundairo to assault him.
Following a lengthy investigation by Chicago police, the actor is now facing a felony charge of disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false police report in the hope the hoax would boost his career and salary.
"I would like to point out that a lot of the information out there was inaccurate and there were numerous agencies involved in this investigation", Police Sergeant Rocco Alioto said in a statement on Thursday. The influx of information that leaked to the media relating to Jussie Smollett's case has prompted officials to look into where their "vulnerabilities" lie.
This news comes on the heels of another investigation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital where dozens of workers may have been terminated for "improperly reviewing the medical records" of the Empire actor, just so they could sneak a peak at his medical chart.
She maintains that she never accessed the actor's chart directly, but did innocently scroll past his name while looking for another patient's name.
They said hospital bosses still fired them and that others received similar treatment.
"This whole thing started off from him allegedly being attacked by some guys who appeared to be white guys wearing a hat that said "Make America Great Again", yelled epithets at him, and said, This is MAGA country", Latifah says. The judge granted a $100,000 bail, and Smollett paid a $10,000 bond.
Soon after he was charged in February, Empire's executive producers announced that Smollett had been removed from the season's final two episodes.
