The Senate turned away from the Green New Deal on Tuesday as both parties shunned an opportunity to debate a comprehensive climate change plan offered by Democrats. Forty-three Democrats only said "present" when their names were called, refusing to participate in what they say was a Republican sham vote and stunt. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has referred to the Green New Deal as a "huge, self-inflicted, national wound the Democrats are agitating for". Kevin Cramer, R-N.D. Trump likes the way the Green New Deal makes Democrats "uncomfortable", said Sen.
"I gave the speech because I believe more human beings are the answer to our problems", Lee said on the show.
The question, Ocasio-Cortez said, is no longer about whether money will have to be spent on climate change-related issues.
The same Democrats tried to justify their lack of affirmative votes by making excuses about the process being rushed, and lacking customary hearings and procedures.
In an interview with TIME, Ocasio-Cortez expressed frustration with critics who have picked apart the resolution. They say Republicans who turn debate over global warming into a game will pay a political price. She also emphasised the importance of focussing on climate change as a bipartisan issue.

Sean Duffy introduced an amendment to a homeless bill being debated in the Financial Services Committee that would impose green standards as a condition of receiving benefits, and then explained his proposal this way: "The Green New Deal is one that if you are a rich liberal from maybe NY or California, it sounds great because you can afford to retrofit your home or build a new home that has zero emissions, that is energy efficient, affordable and safe" - Ocasio-Cortez snapped.
An overhaul of the American transportation industry would also take fold, expanding electric vehicle use with the "goal to replace every combustion-engine vehicle" and building high-speed railways "at a scale where air travel stops becoming necessary", according to a fact sheet released by Ocasio-Cortez's office during a rocky unveiling of the bill. Another poll found that 43 percent of Americans said they are less likely to vote for a candidate who backs the Green New Deal, compared to 30 percent who said they are more likely to do so. He said he was treating the plan "with the seriousness it deserves".
Republicans, meanwhile, continued to mock the Green New Deal as a step toward socialism and pushed for a House vote similar to the one in the Senate.
Following the disastrous vote for Ocasio-Cortez, the young socialist took to Twitter to try to save face, declaring that she told her Democratic colleagues to not vote for the proposal. "If this guy can be Senator, you can do anything", she wrote to her 3.7 million followers.
