Police investigate man who threw child from mall balcony in MN

The boy was critically injured and is being treated at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts said during an afternoon news conference April 12.

Potts said the suspect took off running right after the incident but was quickly found and arrested at the mall.

Shortly after the incident, police arrested a 24-year-old man inside the mall, one of the state's leading tourist attractions, after he had fled the scene, Potts said.

Police have confirmed a suspect has been arrested after the child, 5, was chucked from the balcony at the shopping centre in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Investigators are working with mall officials to determine if there was video, Potts said. Police said they are unaware of a possible motive. But three months later he was accused of returning and throwing a glass at a woman in a mall restaurant. Potts says officers gave first aid but the 5-year-old child suffered "significant injuries" and had been taken to a hospital.

The chaotic scene played out about 10:15 a.m.in the southeast corner of the mall.

Johnson says the woman was screaming that her child was thrown from a third-floor balcony at the Bloomington, Minnesota, mall.

Metro Transit stopped Blue Line light rail service in and out of the mall around 11 a.m. due to the police activity. "That suspect has been taken into custody, is now at the Bloomington Police Department".

"We have counseling services available for anyone who may need assistance", the statement continued.

He was also convicted of fifth-degree assault, trespassing and interfering with a police officer for an incident in October of 2015.

"We don't believe that there is a threat to the public at this point as the suspect has been located", he said, adding that the incident appeared to be isolated.
