The report said OIG recognizes the "extraordinary challenges" the Customs and Border Protection faces, but urges DHS to take "immediate steps to alleviate risky overcrowding and prolonged detention of children and adults in the Rio Grande Valley".
The images were released Tuesday by US government auditors who visited facilities in South Texas where migrant adults and children who crossed the nearby border with Mexico are processed and detained.
Migrants banged on cell windows and shouted when investigators visited.
The inspector general's report says the opportunity for personal hygiene is scarce and that many migrants became ill and constipated from the diet of bologna sandwiches that they are given.
During an interview on Tuesday's "The Story" on Fox News Channel, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) reacted to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D-NY) recent trip to a border detention facility where she claimed detainees were forced to drink from toilets and that she was harassed by border patrol agents.

"The Trump Administration's actions at the southern border are grotesque and dehumanizing", Committee chairman Rep. Elijah Cummings said in a statement.

The House was pressured into swiftly passing the bill by Republicans and conservative Democrats, but lacked key caveats sought by progressives, including stricter guidelines about conditions in detention facilities and less funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
US lawmakers, officials and rights activists who have visited migrant detention centers along the border describe nightmarish conditions marked by overcrowding and inadequate access to food, water and other basic necessities.
He also told the Religion News Service the group may in the future provide shelter and foster care to migrant children crossing into the U.S. That's what Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY says is happening at a facility in Clint, Texas.
Ocasio-Cortez, a first-term New York Democrat, suggested in a Twitter post on Tuesday that the CBP was a "rogue agency".
9,500 - nearly HALF that number - are in a racist & sexually violent secret CBP Facebook group.
