Research in Motion’s most popular smart phone, the Blackberry, is facing a controversy in another country yet again, as India’s government officials plan to hold a meeting with RIM officials to settle security concerns among Blackberry’s encrypted messaging and email services. For India, Blackberry’s services are a threat to national security.
This is also the sentiment shared by many other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, which just recently came to an agreement with Research in Motion, resulting in the Canada based company allowing the Saudi Arabian government access a set of codes which would allow them to monitor user data from Blackberry users.
Indian officials and Research in Motion officials will have a meeting on Thursday, and an ultimatum will be agreed upon so that the device will no longer be a threat to national security. The device has been linked to several terroristic attacks in the past, an example of which is the Mumbai attacks in the year 2008 which resulted in the death of 166 people due to militant activities.
If Research in Motion will not share user data to government officials in India, the government will temporarily ban email and messaging services in the phone, disrupting a lot of personal and business activities.
