The Japanese government has expressed that they are constantly giving special attention to the rising of the value of Yen against the U.S. dollar. Many analysts are speculating that the government will intervene with the currency markets, but the government has not stated anything regarding the matter, even as it has already intervened in a similar situation last March of 2004.
This is the highest value of the Yen against the dollar in 15 years, and the main concern is that this will have unwanted effects on exports and exporters. When Yoshihiko Noda, the Finance Minister of Japan, was asked if they are considering intervention on the foreign exchange market, the minister just stated that he will not comment on that, at least for now.
On the other hand, he stated that the government will take the necessary action to deal with this problem, such as constant monitoring of the Yen’s value against the dollar, and having discussions with other governments regarding the fluctuation of currency values and the stock markets.
Being one of the biggest exporters in the world, primarily due to its auto parts, cars, semiconductors and consumer electronics, Japan does not want the Yen to be strong, because it also means that their exports will be more expensive for potential buyers.
